I designed this scenario to explore a darker, less heroic side of Dungeons & Dragons, focusing on a grim atmosphere and an investigation-driven experience.
At the heart of the story lies a cursed axe that the wanted man cannot let go of, gradually driving him out of control. The objective is to lead players toward suspecting the existence of the weapon without confirming it until the very end.
The investigation is built around numerous clues, some of them deliberately misleading, in order to encourage doubt and speculation. The atmosphere constantly shifts between tension and unease, while lighter moments are introduced to prevent the experience from becoming overwhelmingly oppressive.
This scenario was born from my discovery of the Astral Dreadnought in Monsters of the Multiverse, a colossal creature capable of containing an entire plane of existence within its body. The goal here is to immerse players in a strange environment whose true nature they do not immediately understand, before eventually realizing that they are inside a living being.
The adventure emphasizes discovery and surprise, featuring bizarre and eccentric encounters designed to make the experience memorable.
A strong visual and thematic contrast between mineral elements (rocks and lava) and organic ones (the oversized interior of a living body) reinforces the unsettling atmosphere and encourages players to piece together the truth themselves.
At first glance, this scenario follows a classic structure: a series of murders in a village leading to the exploration of a dungeon. However, the investigation gradually gives way to demons and betrayal, turning it into a more unconventional experience.
As the story takes place in the Stormbringer universe, I incorporated many of its defining elements: demons, unsettling creatures that challenge sanity, and dark locations rich in symbolism.
Despite the complexity of the setting, the scenario remains accessible to newcomers, allowing them to discover the Young Kingdoms organically. This approach also encourages player freedom and improvisation throughout the adventure.
